Montek lc are the tablets belongs to group of anti histamines. These medicines act by blocking the leukotriene receptors. Montek LC tablet and syrup is used in maintenance treatment of asthma and second line of drug for allergic rhinitis. This medicine is in the tablet form hence taken orally.

The two main ingredients of montek lc are:-


This tablets used to cure the following conditions :-

  1. Asthma due to allergens

It is the condition characterized by inflammation of air passage and lungs. Although this airway obstruction is reversible. There could be coughing, sneezing, heaviness in chest and chest tightening.

  1. Allergic rhinitis

It is the condition characterized by inflammation of nasal passage, which is a response or reaction of our immune system to various allergens present in the atmospheric air.

  1. Hives or urticaria

It is a condition characterized by inflammation of skin. A swollen slightly red patches or plaques are seen on skin. Itching, burning and tingling sensations are felt in hives.


Montelukast work by blocking the leukotriene receptors and preferably used in bronchial asthma and other allergic symptoms. It blocks the leukotriene D4 receptor in the lungs which decreases the inflammation and it relaxes the smooth muscles of lungs.

Levocetirizine is a non sedative third generation antihistaminic drug used for treating the symptoms associated with allergies. It works by competitive inhibition, it doesn’t interfere with the release of histamine rather binds with histamine receptor and prevent histamine binding.


Dosage depends upon various factors such as age of patient, patient’s history, drug history, patient’s present condition, severity of disease, allergic symptoms in response of drug intake or any hypersensitivity.

Patients should explain the severity of his illness and other related conditions to the doctor well, so that he could prescribe the required dose of montek lc to the patient.

Some specific conditions like pregnancy of a woman, any kind of hypersensitivity, enlargement of prostate, any kidney disorder or liver diseases requires dose modification etc.

As we know drowsiness is the common side effect of montek lc, hence the patient is advised to take the medicine before bed so that he will not feel sleepy in the daytime during their work.

What to do if you missed the dose –

You should take the medicine immediately whenever you realise that you have missed the dose. If you are late enough, and the timing of next dose has arrived so you should skip the missed dose. you should never take an extra dose to compensate the missed dose. As per doctor’s suggestions always try to take the dose of montek lc on a fixed time daily.

What to do 2 if you have taken extra dose –

You should always try hard not to make an overdose of any medicine. Instead of curing disease it will create a lot of other issues. If by chance you overdosed your medicine then immediately consult your doctor if you are having the following symptoms –

  • Excess dizziness or sleepiness.

  • Unusual restlessness.

  • Confusions or convulsions.

The supportive measure here could be gastric lavage ( Irrigation of stomach to remove any poison, toxins or unwanted substance ).


Montek lc is prescribed to those patients who are having the following symptoms –

  • Running nose.

  • Watery eyes associated with itching.

  • Coughing and sneezing.

  • Hives or urticaria.

  • Inflammation of nasal mucosa or buccal mucosa.

  • Allergies around ear.

  • Skin allergy.

  • Dust or pollen allergy.

  • Other allergic symptoms.

This medicine montek lc is taken orally or as a solution form. This drug is prescribed alone or in combination with other drugs as well. It can be taken before or after meal.


Montek lc tablet is taken orally. You can have it with normal water but try not to chew it or crush it, just engulf it with water.

As per the prescription of doctor you can have it before or after meal. Always try to take your medicines on a fixed time.


It is available in following forms:-

  • Montek lc tablets.

  • Montek lc syrups ( for kids ).

  • Montek lc tablets ( for kids ).

As syrup for kids is available in suspension form. Composition of this syrup is a little bit different in quantity of components. This syrup consists of –

  • Montelukast = 5 mg per 5 ml.

  • Levocetirizine = 2.5 mg per 5 ml.


The side effects of montek lc varies in different age groups and also may vary from person to person.

Patients should always give detailed information to their doctor about the other medications supplements and herbs taken by them while consuming montek lc to prevent various drugs interactions and adverse effects.

Age groups and related side effects are :-

  • Between 0-6 years of age – nausea vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation.

  • Between 6-11 years of age – malaise, fever, cough, sleepiness, tiredness, epistaxis ( nose bleeding).

  • More than 12 years of age – sore throat, nasal or throat inflammation, dry mouth, sleepiness, dizziness.

Other common non serious side effects  :-

  • Excess sweat.

  • Heaviness in head.

  • Diarrhoea.

  • Headache.

  • Sleepiness.

  • Tiredness.

  • Dizziness.

  • Abdominal pain.

  • Weakness.

  • Dry mouth.

Serious side effects :-

  • Blurring in vision.

  • Difficulty in breathing.

  • Pale or skin discoloration.

  • Slightly anemic.

  • Mood swings ( elevation and depression in mood ).

  • Problem in kidney.

  • Difficulty in urination.

  • Other allergic reactions.

  • As severe drowsiness can be seen, so patient can’t drive after takin montek lc tablets.


  • To avoid any drug interactions you should inform your doctor about your drug history, any allergy, medication or herbs you are taking presently.

  • You should also inform any ill condition of yours or any surgery you are going to have in near future.

  • As this drug induces drowsiness, you must avoid alcohol because the collective effect may lead to excess drowsiness.

  • As montek lc causes drowsiness you must avoid driving after taking this medicine.

  • Patients having any kind of liver disease or kidney disorders should inform their doctor about this condition before starting the medicine.

  • If you have any allergy with the composition of this drug you should avoid having it as it may cause hypertensive reactions.

  • Patients diagnosed with churg strauss syndrome ( inflammation of blood vessels and having a history of asthma or allergy ) and epilepsy should consult their doctor before consuming montek lc.

  • Drug interactions can also be seen with patients taking medicines of asthma at the same time.


Following medicines are contraindicated or should be avoided while taking montek lc to prevent drugs interactions :-

  • Carbamazapine.

  • Theophylline.

  • Clobazam.

  • Ritonavir.

  • Fluconazole.

  • Gemfibrozil.

  • Phenytoin.

  • Rifampin.

  • Codeine.

  • Phenobarbital.

Following diseases or conditions also reflect some interactions to montek lc –

  • Hypersensitivity – patients who are allergic to any component of this medicine should strictly avoid it, as it may cause severe allergic reactions.

  • Liver or kidney disorders – such patients should immediately inform their doctors about it so that any required changes or drug modifications can be done to prevent complications.

  • Alcoholism – alcohol is strictly prohibited as it’s add on effect may cause excessive drowsiness in the patient.


  • We should store it at room temperature and must keep it in a shadowy place away from heat and direct sunlight.

  • You should keep this medicine away from the reach of children or any pet of yours.

  • Store it in a cool and dry place away from the moist.


Q1. Is montek lc safe to consume during pregnancy?

Ans – As per the researches on montek lc tablets, it is not found to be teratogenic which means it doesn’t harm to fetus. But for betterment always seek advice of your doctor before consuming it in such conditions.

Q2. Is montek lc an addictive medicine?

Ans – According to medical science studies till now it is not found as addictive drug. So it does not cause any addiction.

Q3. Is montek lc safe in lactating women and during breastfeeding?

Ans – It is absolutely safe to take this medicine during lactation and breastfeeding because it cannot cross into milk. So it will not lead to any harmful effects on baby.

Q4. Is is safe to consume alcohol while having montek lc?

Ans – It is strictly prohibited to consume alcohol if you are on this medication. It will create more side effects and could be hazardous to your health.

Q5. Can we drive after having montek lc tablets?

Ans – It is a big no. You are not recommended to drive after having this medicine because montek lc induces drowsiness as a side effect so driving in such condition could be risky for your and someone else’s life.

Q6. What will happen to me if by chance I take expired montek lc tablet?

Ans – No need to be so much scared as it doesn’t produce any deadly effect , but it will not help you to cure your ill condition because an expired medicine doesn’t have its potency and efficacy and it will not be helpful.

Q7. Should we consume montek lc in empty stomach?

Ans – There is no such requirements. Preferably you should consume it after meal so that it will get absorbed effectively.

Q8. Can we consume montek lc in sore throat or throat infections?

Ans – If your throat infection is not caused by viral or bacterial infections then only you can use this medicine to get symptomatic relief. As montek lc is effective against allergies so if will help to an extent.
